Dark Sky
What does Dark Sky mean?
The preservation of the night sky against light pollution or sky glow has become known as "Dark Sky" and the present awareness is primarily a result of the well intentioned efforts of the International Dark-Sky Association.
The past decade has seen numerous lighting ordinances being written to preserve the nighttime sky, to reduce light trespass, and to regulate the types of fixtures which contribute to light pollution.
Intention versus Results
Despite good intentions, many lighting ordinances are poorly written and can result in increased light pollution, wasted energy and poor lighting. Each community must establish its priorities for lighting. In towns near a major observatory, this may mean lumen per acre, spectral output and hours of operation regulations. However, imposing similar regulations in a nostalgic area will likely ruin the nighttime atmosphere.
It is LexaLite’s suggestion that end users consult with a Certified Lighting Professional (LC) for each lighting application. If end users can clearly express their goals, such as reduced night sky pollution, energy efficiency, product longevity, color rendition, etc. and consult with a lighting professional they will end up with a better lighting application than trying to apply “cookie cutter” regulations as the primary criteria for a design.
So how can a semi-cut-off prismatic post top fit into a community that wants to reduce skyglow?
Amazingly well! The following bullet points outline best practices for achieving a nostalgic appearance while reducing skyglow.
- Switch from HPS to reduced lumen output metal halide or compact fluorescent while improving visibility (Berman and Lewin).
- Specify our perforated LiteLid® to minimize uplight, while maintaining a decorative appearance.
- Specify the Lindy® or Little Lindy® with the appropriate optical distribution to maximize pole spacing and minimize wasted light.
The benefits include:
- Reduced glare
- Improved visibility (especially for the elderly)
- Reduced sky-glow
- Reduced energy consumption
- While maintaining a nostalgic appearance.
